Does anyone know if the law has changed since this was published?
It is what I found at the DNR for Hunting.

unlawful to discharge a firearm within 50 yards of a public road, residence or property line.

The reason being was on my property Sunday, having some weekly shooting, and several LEO showed up. The younger Officer was real jumpy but the oldest officer came over and intraduced himself and explained that there were several complaints of extreme bursts of gunfire. They were checking out the collection and had a few questions. the younger ones left and the Older one stayed for a few and also mentioned that
Newton County has a Law that you must be 300yds from all areas stated above. I cannot find any info and I have yet to call the County.
I just do not want to be illegal on my own yard. I can get 300yds in any direction if needed I have a lot of land. But I like the area I have now . it is the safest and quietest flattest 150yds shooting. If needed I will set up a 200 yards down by my lake. it just gets real lound reflecting on the water.

The county could have an ordinance further restricting the discharge of firearms (Athens Clarke Co has such an ordinance)...
The County Clerk in the Commissioners Office should be able to provide a copy, or the County Attorney....
The Sheriff's Office will have one, but the Clerk will probably be faster..

In MA we have to be 500 feet away from any dwelling in which we don't have permission of the owner. So you can fire within 500 feet of your own house always. I do not have enough land at home. I do with my weekend place, but the only safe backstop is toward a hill at the base of the house, so I could not do it unless I was there alone. It is not practical except an occasional silenced .22.

Georiga Criminal Code 16-11-103

Discharge of firearms on or near public highway

A person is guilty of a misdemeanor when, without legal justification, he discharges a gun or pistol on or within 50 yards of a public highway or street.

I am not a lawyer, so cannot offer any other info.

Hope this helps. :D

Well I got a call into the County Clerk to see. I was shooting 150 yards from the roadway and 1/4 mile from the nearest house. I just do not want to be breaking any ordinance. This was the first time they came out.

OK here is the Low down.

Quote:
Newton County Code of Ordinances Div. II
2
ARTICLE 2. 1 Discharging Firearms, Air Guns, Etc.
1. It shall be unlawful for any person in unincorporated Newton County to
discharge any gun, pistol, or other firearm within three hundred fifty (350) yards of any street, alley, or building, or at any point upon the land of another person without the express consent of the owner or occupant thereof; or to discharge any air gun, BB gun, or other toy gun which projects lead or any other missile.

So Out comes the measure. I am pretty sure that I can find a nice shooting lane that follows the letter of the law. But it will be near my lake and louder than ever.

What a bummer! " this would not have usually been a problem but all my suppressors' host guns are being repaired or modified."

I think you'd be better off getting a surveyor to mark your area and then having some sort of document to prove as to the validity of the survey to cover your butt.

If you know any of the deputies you might get one to stop by with a traffic laser and shoot the distances for you...what ever you do, write it down....
